Canada's top employer 2017

On November 7, 2016, Hatch was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers for 2017 by Mediacorp Canada Inc., a recognition that marks the company as a Canadian leader in attracting and retaining employees.

The list is determined based on a number of criteria including physical workspace, social opportunities, health, financial and family benefits, vacation and time-off, employee communications, performance management, training and skills development, and community involvement.

“When we think about working for an exceptional employer, each of us looks for a few key benefits that are important,” says Richard Yerema, managing editor at Mediacorp Canada Inc. “Things like career advancement and training are important when starting our careers, or family-friendly benefits and time-off as we gain more experience. To secure a place on a list like Canada’s Top 100 Employers, an employer has to do everything well – it’s like being a hockey player who excels at both defense and offence, or an athlete who wins a triathlon.”

Mediacorp Canada Inc.’s reasons for selection weigh the Hatch culture against other Canadian employers. Highlights from the selection include Hatch’s future financial planning support, office space, and employee ownership structure—a unique strength amongst engineering firms in Canada.

In support of a positive work culture, Hatch also promotes team-building and camaraderie by participating in community fund-raising and charitable activities. For the fifth consecutive year, Hatch has been the top corporate fund-raiser in the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation's Road Hockey Tournament to Conquer Cancer. The company has raised more than C$1 million, and this year more than 100 employees on 10 teams participated.

Another area that John Bianchini, Hatch’s CEO, personally takes pride in is the company’s professional development program. For the first two to three years, young professionals spend much of their time getting to know the company and its clients. They have the opportunity to meet their peers and senior leaders, both professionally and socially, and they learn to work in teams.

“We draw people from everywhere and we give our young people a chance to see the world and be their best,” explained Bianchini. “At any given time, we will have hundreds of people on assignment outside their native country. That’s the nature of our work. We follow our clients as they expand globally.”
