Cameco and Glencore receive Hatch-CIM Mining & Metals Project Development Safety Award

Vancouver, B.C. — Cameco and Glencore have been awarded the Hatch-CIM Mining & Metals Project Development Safety Award. The awards were presented at a gala on May 2, hosted during CIM’s annual conference in Vancouver, which coincided with North American Occupational Safety & Health Week, May 1–7, 2016

Cameco was recognized for an exceptional safety program at the McArthur River Electrical Substation Project in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  Several safety-specific programs and systems were developed for construction of the project which led to an outstanding safety record. Glencore’s Process Gas Project located in Falconbridge, Ontario was also chosen in recognition of the project’s culture of safety excellence, through team-wide support, implementing proactive audits and safety checks.

The award selection criterion is based on the safe execution of a significant Canadian project by a project owner or project team who is an active CIM member.

Also at the CIM awards gala, Hatch experts Chris Twigge-Molecey and Mohammed Ali were recognized for their significant individual contributions to the mining industry in Canada.

“I am deeply honoured to be recognized by CIM,” said Twigge-Molecey (Hatch Senior Advisor), who received the CIM Distinguished Service Medal for his long-standing service and positive impact on the mining industry.

In his acceptance speech Twigge-Molecey comments, “We face global issues in water, energy, climate change, food supply, and sustainability in general.  As engineers and scientists we have been given the fundamental tools to tackle these problems…if we can combine our technical excellence with political skills, our impact will be dramatic.”

Twigge-Molecey is a past winner of the Airey Award, one of the most prestigious awards in Canadian metallurgy, Past President of CIM, and is currently Deputy Chair of the Canadian Mining Innovation Council. Twigge-Molecey has served 43 years at Hatch, including roles as Managing Director responsible for China, Latin America, and Technology Development.

Ali, a sustainability and life cycle expert, received CIM’s Central District Distinguished Service Award for his significant contributions to mining and support of CIM’s GTA-West branch. 

Ali spoke on the importance of sustainability and corporate culture as part of the CIM technical program, commenting, “Sustainability starts from the ground up. The corporate culture has to make sure that sustainability is built into every mindset and service, starting with grassroots initiatives, a vision for positive change, and a strong focus on where you can make the most impact.”
