Tina Armstrong

Tina Armstrong joined Hatch shortly after graduating from the University of Waterloo in 1998 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in chemical engineering. Since then, she has led metallurgical and process engineering on some of our most technically complex and capital‑intensive metals projects, leading to her 2024 appointment to Hatch’s board of directors. Her first‑hand experience across the full metals value chain and a pragmatic, execution‑focused perspective, strengthens board oversight and decision‑making in global, high‑risk client engagements. 

Tina built her career on engineering excellence, disciplined delivery, and stakeholder accountability. As a board director, she applies a governance lens to execution certainty and strengthens how we help clients anticipate risk and protect outcomes in complex environments. 

As a process engineer and a passionate advocate for efficiency in design and execution, Tina pushes teams to think outside the box to improve outcomes. She sponsors Hatch’s digital transformation journey, and advocates for practical improvements, new tools, and innovative strategies that help teams work smarter and communicate more effectively.

Tina has worked on projects across Canada, the United States, Brazil, South Africa, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. That global experience has sharpened her understanding of operating environments, regulatory complexity, and stakeholder expectations, and it has strengthened her instincts for identifying risk variables early and putting mitigation tactics in place.

She served as lead process engineer for all phases of the $2‑billion Onça Puma ferronickel project in Brazil, a two‑line greenfield nickel laterite smelter, and worked extensively on site and in project offices to guide multidisciplinary teams through execution and commissioning. This “in the trenches” exposure informs her reputation for steady damage control when conditions change, paired with proactive, clear communication of activities, risks, timelines, and strategies to clients.

Peers around the world respect Tina for her ability to dissect complex technical challenges and translate them into practical, resilient engineering solutions. She believes the industry has a responsibility to meet society’s growing demand for critical minerals and metals while embedding sustainability, long‑term resilience, and positive social impact into project design and delivery. As an active contributor to conference panels and industry forums worldwide, she helps advance conversations on the future of metallurgy and critical minerals. She is also a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion within the engineering profession.

Tina is a member of Professional Engineers of Ontario. Outside of her professional work, she enjoys hiking, cycling, and skiing.
