The comprehensive assessment, strategically timed ahead of the Spring Budget on March 6th, drives forward a compelling case for multi-billion-pound funding to improve connectivity, modernize the transport experience and unlock economic growth across London.

The report, produced by Hatch, disclosed that passengers using the Bakerloo Line have experienced a staggering 370 percent surge in the time they have “lost” over the past decade due to delays and cancellations. The report also highlighted that the line is now “at risk of critical failure” unless immediate action is taken, including an urgent overhaul and the replacement of its 52-year-old trains.

"As a central part of London's economic and cultural infrastructure, the Bakerloo Line Upgrade and Extension comes at a pivotal time for moving London forward,” says Andrew Caruso, Hatch’s director of Urban Solutions. "We were happy to partner with TfL, Central London Forward, and a number of London Boroughs in articulating Bakerloo's role in driving economic growth, enhancing connectivity and supporting London’s journey to net zero."

The report addresses key imperatives for unlocking this opportunity, which includes socioeconomic growth, transport and economic resilience, and the race towards net zero. It acknowledges the challenges faced on the Bakerloo Line today and the opportunities brought forward by the project. The BLUE will be pivotal in enhancing connectivity and opportunity for some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the UK. It will drive economic growth, support job creation, and unlock housing and commercial development.

Joe Dromey, Director of Central London Forward, said;

"The Bakerloo Line Upgrade and Extension is the next big opportunity for London. This project would create jobs, drive growth, unlock housing, and transform connectivity. It would be good for the capital, and for the UK too. “Joe Dromey adds, "This project is backed by the Mayor of London and TfL, by London's business community and by London boroughs. But we can't deliver the Bakerloo Line Upgrade and Extension alone. We need Government to work with us to unlock this project.”

Hatch's scope involved a collaborative approach working with Central London Forward, partner boroughs and Transport for London to deliver an updated case for BLUE, including additional considerations related to the post-Covid macro-economic environment and the environmental impacts of the investment.

View the report

View the report here

About Hatch

Hatch is a project delivery, engineering, and professional services firm. Together, the group has secured a design-build contract for the construction of the Potomac River Tunnel (PRT).

The $819 million PRT contract represents a pivotal moment for DC Water, marking the largest-ever awarded contract by the Authority. The 5.5-mile-long tunnel will serve as a crucial mechanism to control combined sewer overflows (CSOs) into the Potomac River, significantly enhancing the water quality of this vital natural resource. This project is an integral component of the broader Clean Rivers Project, a $2.99 billion initiative aimed at improving water quality in the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers and Rock Creek while strengthening the sewer system's capacity.

Steven Kramer, COWI Senior Project Director, said:
“COWI will lead the design of the tunnel and adits, and provide geotechnical support for the entire project. We leverage our domestic and global personnel to bring experts in multiple disciplines. Our team began working in late 2023 and has already delivered several key early lead items which has enabled the design and build team to begin construction. Working with CBNA-Halmar and Hatch through the tender process and now the actual project has been very exciting and gratifying for our engineers. In a design and build project, it is always rewarding to see our design being implemented especially on such a critical project as the Potomac River Tunnel.”

Bruce MacKay, Hatch’s Managing Director for Water, noted:

"At Hatch, we believe in partnerships that align with our core values of sustainable progress and community enhancement. This collaboration exemplifies our dedication to pioneering designs that ensure a healthier, more sustainable future for the District of Columbia and its residents. Working with our partners, Hatch will be responsible for overall design management as well as the detailed design of underground works, including support of excavation and concrete structures.”

Traversing beneath and along the Georgetown waterfront, West Potomac Park and the National Mall, the 18-foot-diameter tunnel will extend to Hains Point, ultimately connecting to the existing Anacostia River Tunnel. Utilizing advanced tunnel boring machines, the construction will navigate various ground conditions, ranging from soft ground to rock. The surface and subsurface challenges will require precise engineering and the use of innovative construction techniques by the project partners.

Commencing in 2024 and slated for completion in early 2030, the project's impact will be significant. Once operational, the PRT is projected to curtail combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to the Potomac River by an impressive 93 percent during typical rainfall years, solidifying its pivotal role in enhancing environmental sustainability for the region.

For detailed insights into the Potomac River Tunnel Project, please visit dcwater.com/PRT.

About Hatch

Hatch is a project delivery, engineering, and professional services firm. Hatch will provide financial contributions to advance Vale’s corporate goal of uplifting 500,000 people who experience extreme poverty in Brazil by 2030.

Vale and Hatch share a common vision to create lasting, positive effects in the communities in which they work. Together, they are working on the Onça Puma furnace 2 project located in Brazil’s Pará state. As part of Vale’s Partilhar Program, which aims to promote local socio-economic growth with contractors and suppliers, Hatch and Vale will focus their partnership and efforts on alleviating poverty in the region, an issue that has been exacerbated in Latin America by the pandemic. According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, in Latin America 28 years of progress to eliminate extreme poverty was lost as a result of the pandemic.[1]

“Hatch and Vale have been partners for many years. Hatch is the Lead Design Participant and will provide architectural, engineering, project management, and advisory services to support the development of the East Harbour Transit Hub—a major interchange station on the Lakeshore East and Stouffville GO lines, the Ontario Line subway, and future TTC streetcars.

The project is being delivered as part of the SmartTrack Stations Program and will be built north of the East Harbour development, which is being delivered through Ontario’s Transit-Oriented Communities program.

The East Harbour Transit Hub, which will provide a gateway to East Harbour development, will be the second busiest train station in the GO network (after Toronto’s Union Station). It will support local transit needs in the community and regional connectivity. Service levels planned as part of GO Expansion would see a GO train arriving at EHTH as frequently as every five minutes.

“East Harbour is the most significant city building opportunity of this generation. Over 30 years, Mike has led design teams on urban renewal and new township projects across Australia, the UAE, and Asia.

Mike, with Erwin Roberts, co-founded urban planning consultancy RobertsDay, which integrated with Hatch in 2020. The integration enabled the company to unite its front-end spatial planning, urban design and placemaking capabilities with Hatch's expertise in development strategy, urban economics, infrastructure master planning, engineering, implementation and program management. Hatch’s newly integrated urban solutions team could also offer its services further overseas, work across different sectors including urban solutions, mining, infrastructure, and renewable energy, and draw on the expertise of 10,000 specialist Hatch employees across 150 countries.

Since then, Hatch has also broadened its services to include economics, transport planning, landscape architecture, community engagement, social value teams, and aerotropolis design. It has been awarded some of Australia’s biggest projects, including the Western Australia Government’s Future of Fremantle project, the New South Wales Government’s Bradfield City Centre, and Victoria’s Avalon aerotropolis project.

At the time of the integration, RobertsDay was one of the most important and awarded urban design and planning consultancies in Australia, with 65 employees across five cities and 600 projects worldwide. It won more than 100 awards, including the International FIABCI Award for the World’s Best Master-planned Community, 52 UDIA awards, and 24 PIA awards.

James Moore, managing director of the Hatch urban solutions team, says: "I have enormous respect for the accomplishments of our Australian-based urban solutions team in its 30 years. In the early days, Mike and Erwin’s visionary concepts went against the conventional practice of putting housing developments on vast hectares and connecting them to arterial roads. RobertsDay championed integrated, mixed-use, walkable neighborhoods that incorporated transit and green spaces long before these concepts gained widespread popularity". “Since the integration, the Australian urban solutions team has expanded beyond urban design and planning to apply its insights and expertise to the mining, metals and energy sectors—for instance, remediation planning and economic analyses of renewable projects.”

How our urban landscapes have changed in 30 years

Reflecting on the changes in urban planning since he co-founded RobertsDay in 1993, Mike Day highlights several key shifts. “Australia’s rapid house price and population growth over the last three decades has transformed urban landscapes and resulted in reduced household sizes, which, in turn, has influenced housing preferences, leading to an apartment boom and more compact housing forms to maintain housing affordability. The planning and urban development industry has once again embraced transit based mixed-use, walkable urbanism that prioritizes community living and fosters social interaction". “The rise and growth of the sharing economy, with services such as Uber, have fundamentally transformed transport as a service and how we navigate urban spaces. Additionally, the integration of technology has shifted our understanding of transportation, with the emergence of micro-mobility options such as eBikes.”

“Urban planners must be futurists”: trends over the next 30 years

Mike and his team have monitored, and even forecasted, many of these changes. He says: “We are much more than urbanists—we are a team of futurists. We specializes in evaluating and organizing the implications of systemic social, cultural, economic, and technological changes to optimize their potential cumulative impacts on future cities.”

Looking ahead, Hatch envisions a future where urban planning will focus on various critical aspects. Mike says:“Urban regeneration will be a top priority, with a concerted effort to revitalize existing urban zones, promote sustainable development, and lay the foundations for transit-based, mixed-use, walkable urban settings within the growth areas of our capital and regional cities to create more vibrant and eco-friendly cities. Social value and urban prosperity will also take center stage, with an emphasis on enhancing long-term sustainable social well-being and inclusivity, ensuring that cities provide broader societal benefits for residents.”

In this future vision, Mike says cities will be ‘future-ready’, proactively adapting to upcoming challenges and opportunities, and embracing social, cultural, economic, and technological changes to remain resilient and vibrant. Transit-oriented communities will become more common, with neighborhoods developed around efficient public transportation, reducing dependence on personal vehicles, thereby easing congestion, and improving overall quality of life. He says: “Infrastructure forms the physical and functional backbone of any city. Too often, public transit is planned, designed, and operated primarily as a system for moving people. Hatch’s urban solutions team has multifaceted experience and expertise in optimizing the social, economic, and place-related value of transit investments to create liveable, walkable, mixed-use transit-oriented communities."

He says: “Cities will also find innovative ways to repurpose underutilized or obsolete urban assets, turning them into sustainable and functional spaces to reduce waste and environmental impact. “Suburban areas will undergo significant transformation, becoming more sustainable, walkable, and integrated with urban centres, ensuring they contribute to a greener, more interconnected urban landscape. This forward-looking perspective reflects a commitment to creating urban environments that are adaptive, inclusive, and sustainable in the decades to come.”

Hatch will honor the legacy of RobertsDay’s 30 years of industry excellence in early 2024 with an event for clients and other stakeholders, featuring keynote speaker NY-based Professor June Williamson, one of the world’s foremost urbanism and built form experts and authors. June is best known for her ideas on the retrofitting of American suburbia into a denser, more efficient urban pattern.

-- 30 –

For more information, please contact:

Lindsay Janca
Global Director, Public Relations, Hatch
Tel: +1 905 403 4199
Email:
media@hatch.com

About Hatch

Whatever our clients envision, our teams can design and build. The annual awards competition recognizes innovative and outstanding work by companies and leaders in the concrete industry within Ontario.

This innovative project has received six notable awards to date.

Kingston Third Crossing, also known as Waaban Crossing, is a new 1.2km-long bridge that connects communities on the east and west sides of the Cataraqui River, improving emergency services and response times, promoting active and public transportation alternatives, and fostering growth in the region.

This is the first bridge in North America to use the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) contract model, an approach that connects all partners from the onset of the project, sets shared goals, and maintains shared accountability to ensure the best outcome possible. The Kingston Third Crossing partnership between the City of Kingston, contracted design (Hatch and SYSTRA-IBT) and construction (Kiewit), and trade partners Bauer Foundations Canada and Walters Group, needed to minimize costs and risks as early and effectively as possible.

The project was recognized by the OCA committee for its excellence and innovation in high-performance concrete materials and construction.

Under the IPD approach, the IPD team successfully navigated supply constraints and the rising price of steel by using concrete. The innovative optimization of material selection and structural analyses resulted in an estimated $12 million in overall savings. The project’s concrete suppliers, Canada Building Materials (CBM) and DECAST, were integral to the success of the project and collaborated closely with the IPD team throughout the project.

This collaborative approach with DECAST resulted in the design, manufacture, transportation, and installation of the tallest (2.425 m) and longest (approx. 48.5 m) NU precast prestressed one-piece concrete girders ever produced in Ontario, which also surpassed the standard Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) durability requirements.

From left to right: From Kiewit - Oscar Antommattei, Joshua Pidgeon, Alexander Savides, Jonathan Panneton, and from Hatch - Majella Anson-Cartwright

This collaborative approach with CBM resulted in the development and testing of ready-mix concretes for cast-in-place bridge elements that were practical, placeable and scalable, while meeting the client’s requirements. CBM also provided effective solutions for minimizing concrete temperature during the warmer months, improving overall cast-in-place concrete quality.

The Waaban Crossing is the result of partnering excellence across numerous stakeholders, including three levels of government, the IPD Team, local authorities and communities, sub-contractors and constructors, and trade partners.

«Hatch is proud to receive the Ontario Concrete Infrastructure and Project of the Year awards as it recognizes the excellence of our work on the Kingston Third Crossing project, » announced Project Manager Biljana Rajlic, Global Director, Highways & Bridges. «It reflects our dedication to providing innovative project management and technical solutions in meaningful, sustainable, and cost-effective ways. »

For more information about the Kingston Third Crossing (Waaban Crossing) project click here.

-30-

For more information, please contact:

Lindsay Janca
Global Director, Public Relations
Hatch
Tel: +1 905 403 4199
Email: media@hatch.com

About Hatch

Hatch is a global engineering, project management, and professional services firm. Winners were announced today by The Globe and Mail.

The Greater Toronto Area is Canada's largest metropolis, and home to more than 6.4 million people. As such, many of the country’s biggest and best employers are headquartered in the GTA, making the competition for top talent fierce. As a global company, Hatch has offices all over the world, but the GTA is home to our largest contingent—more than 2,000 colleagues work in one of our five GTA offices.

“Seeing the diversity in our workplace is one of the best parts of my job,” says Nadia Benjamin, the HR director for Western Canada. “Whether it is celebrating Eid, International Women's Day, or World Mental Health Day, among many others, I see our colleagues bring their full selves to the office and I can't help but be proud."

With the importance of employees’ value and time at the forefront of themes, we continue to focus on the safety and well-being of our greatest asset: our people. In the past year, we emphasized the in-person interactions that benefit our workplace culture and our projects, implementing a professional development leadership and mentorship program for our employees that focused on the importance of collaboration and working together. We also launched a mental wellness program, including new courses, resources, and meditation spaces to help colleagues. Last year, we almost quadrupled our mental health benefit for staff to ensure that they could access the care they need.

One of the other benefits for our staff is the ability to work on the world's most interesting projects. As a flat, globally connected organization, we pride ourselves on sourcing the best talent to solve our clients' toughest challenges, regardless of where they are in the world. Our experts have the opportunity to work on projects all over the world—projects that have a meaningful impact on our communities, whether it is building new transit to create livable cities or helping the world's heavy industries to decarbonize.

Now in its eighteenth year, the Greater Toronto’s Top Employers competition is an editorial project that recognizes employers with exceptional human resources programs and forward-thinking workplace policies. Editors at Mediacorp review employers on eight criteria, which have remained consistent since the project’s inception: (1) Workplace; (2) Work Atmosphere & Social; (3) Health, Financial & Family Benefits; (4) Vacation & Time Off; (5) Employee Communications; (6) Performance Management; (7) Training & Skills Development; and (8) Community Involvement. The editors publish detailed ‘reasons for selection’ for these criteria, providing transparency in the selection of winners and a catalogue of best practices for employers and job-seekers alike.

For more information on why Hatch has been selected as a Greater Toronto Top Employer, click here.

If you are driven to make a difference and work alongside colleagues that share that same passion, Hatch may be the place for you. When bringing it to new regions, it was equally important to focus on relevant, regionally specific issues and topics.

In Johannesburg, South Africa, keynote speaker Dr. Darren Green, Neurowellness Consultant and Sports Physician, introduced the applications of neuroscience in business and leadership. Tapping into his philosophies on innovation, creativity, and problem solving, Dr. Green’s engaging delivery style and charismatic approach to teaching left audience members with understanding and insight into the mind/body connection as he shared his riveting keynote Redefining employee wellness in the millennial era.

Dr. Darren Green

In Perth and Brisbane, Australia, Dr. Lucy Hone, Adjunct Senior Professor at the University of Canterbury and Co-Director of the New Zealand Institute of Wellbeing and Resilience, delivered her keynote What does it really mean to be resilient? The award was presented on November 24, 2023 in Mumbai, India at the Tunnelling Asia Conference 2023, organized by the Tunnelling Association of India. The conference highlights the most ambitious underground projects from all over the world as well as the latest innovations, techniques, and methods in tunnelling.

The award honors design and construction innovations, safety performances, complexity, advances in technology, project challenges and their solutions, and other exceptional circumstances.

As part of the Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) project, extensive replacement and rehabilitation work on the Mount Royal Tunnel (MRT) was critical to constructing a new automated light metro network across the greater Montréal area. Hatch’s team performed design for the MRT rehabilitation while also providing construction management, site technical support, and full-time site supervision during construction. The REM is Québec’s largest public transit project of the last fifty years, delivered by CDPQ Infra.

The Mount Royal Tunnel is a vital transportation artery that runs beneath the city of Montréal, Québec, connecting the island of Montréal to the city's northern suburbs. The southernmost 92 m of the existing 5 km long Mount Royal Tunnel, which was completed in 1917, required replacement due to deterioration caused by the infiltration of chloride-laden groundwater. An additional 290 m of the tunnel required rehabilitation. Hatch was responsible for the design of the work, while a joint venture that included Hatch oversaw its implementation by the NouvLR consortium.

Hatch's sequential demolition method, an innovative double arch replacement and rehabilitation approach, was developed to complete major work to meet current safety standards and to adapt the 100-year-old tunnel to the REM's electric light metro system. The design and the construction project phases were achieved while facing major challenges, which included performing work in a dense urban environment during the height of the COVID pandemic, completing construction beneath an active operating subway, and managing the presence of unexploded dynamite in the rock that posed a safety risk.

“We are very proud to receive this award from the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association,” said Gary Kramer, senior technical advisor and principal project manager for the MRT. “The Mount Royal Tunnel rehabilitation project shows Hatch’s commitment to creating cutting-edge and safety-oriented solutions to improve local and sustainable transportation.”

The work promoted the sustainable use of underground space by repurposing an existing rail tunnel for public transit use. The project employed the most cost-saving methods while meeting project durability criteria, and was completed safely, on time, and on budget.

Since 2015, the ITA has recognized remarkable achievements in tunnelling and the underground industry. Founded in 1974 by the initiative of nineteen nations, the ITA’s mission is to lead, advocate, and facilitate the development of sustainable and innovative solutions for increased, optimized, safe, and equitable use of underground space.

To learn more about the Mount Royal Tunnel project, visit the Hatch project page.

For more information, please contact:

Lindsay Janca
Global Director, Public Relations
Hatch
Tel: +1 905 403 4199
Email: media@hatch.com

About Hatch

Hatch is a global engineering, project management, and professional services firm. B4SA focuses on key priority areas and works in close collaboration with government counterparts to find innovative solutions and create a positive impact for all South Africans.

The pledge states: “As South African business leaders, we firmly believe in the immense potential of our country. We are committed to building it and have come together to address the current challenges with the aim of achieving sustainable, inclusive economic growth. Through strategic partnerships and focused interventions, we have the power to make a significant and positive impact on our nation, creating hope for all South Africans. We are resolutely committed to being a force for good.”

The scale, diversity, and depth of the companies behind this pledge is unprecedented, with an expected increase in the number of companies participating. The companies represented by these CEOs and leadership operate across all sectors of the South African economy, with the values of the listed entities exceeding R11 trillion, employing more than 1.2 million people.

All sectors of society acknowledge and experience the impact of the many crises currently facing South Africa. These include low economic growth, collapsing infrastructure, rampant crime and corruption, and unacceptably high levels of inequality and unemployment.

The CEOs who have signed this pledge are reaffirming their belief in the country’s potential, and their dedication and determination to reversing the current trajectory. Business is committed to using its collective resources and expertise to partner, assist, build, and bolster initiatives aimed at rapidly turning the flywheel and changing our country’s direction.

“Hatch has been present in South Africa since the 1970s, providing crucial support to our clients in the region. We firmly believe in the potential of South Africa and its people, which is why we remain steadfast in our commitment to invest and grow our business here,” shared Olivier. “South Africa’s abundant natural resources position it as a vital player in addressing global challenges like climate change and electrification.”

Hatch is a global engineering, project management, and professional services firm with more 10,000 employees in 65 offices around the world. More than 800 Hatch experts call the company’s South African offices home. Hatch supports the mining, infrastructure, and energy companies in the region.

Beyond the company’s commitment to continue to grow its business in the region, Hatch remains invested in the promotion of the well-being of society through its support of academic programs such as the African Academy and the Minerals Education Trust Fund, among others. These programs are focused on encouraging more youth—especially those from diverse and underrepresented groups—into careers in STEM. Institutions like the African Academy are also essential to creating positive and lasting impacts in our communities by striving to alleviate unemployment and to contribute to reducing the skills shortage in the technical sectors.

“We are committed to helping South Africa reach its great potential. Through our work, we are helping our clients bring to market the natural resources so greatly needed within South Africa and around the world, while also helping to build the infrastructure and power required to maintain a well-functioning society,” shared Olivier. “We believe in the spirit of South Africans and have confidence that collectively we can help to realize long-term prosperity for this country and its people.”

Cas Coovadia, BUSA CEO, expressed the importance of the collaboration and said: “The backdrop against which this pledge has been made is clear. South Africa currently faces many obstacles that have hindered our path to prosperity and perpetuated a narrative of decline and hopelessness. Business has consistently said that long-term meaningful investment is a precursor to sustainable, inclusive growth which in turn is fundamental to addressing socioeconomic improvement”.

About Hatch: Whatever our clients envision, our teams can design and build. Alouette is the largest primary aluminium producer in North America.

Work began earlier this year for the reline of ABF-1 which will integrate a new furnace technology, allowing for an increase in the furnace's efficiency and operation. With the refractory installation nearly completed, the restart of their baking operations marks the next phase of this project. The refractory materials are designed to withstand the extreme heat and frequent thermal cycles typical of an anode bake furnace.

A second furnace reline (ABF-2) is planned for 2024. This work on ABF-1 and ABF-2 will ensure that Alouette can continue to efficiently produce aluminium, decrease its carbon footprint, and accommodate future growth. After successfully completing the FEL1 through FEL3 studies, Hatch was retained for FEL4 to manage the execution as an EPCM. This is Hatch’s fourth anode bake furnace reline project in Quebec in the last decade.

"We are pleased to partner with Alouette on this important project," said Joe Lombard, Global Managing Director of Metals at Hatch. "Our expertise in furnace relines and refractory materials is critical to the success of this project, and we look forward to helping Alouette increase the efficiency and reliability of its operations.

Alouette's President and Chief Executive Officer, Claude Gosselin, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership: "We are committed to maintaining our position as a leader in the aluminium industry, and this investment is an important component of that strategy. Hatch's team, with its experience and expertise, contributed to make this phase of the project a success."

Photo marking the transfer of all ABF-1 relined sections to Alouette Operations with the contractor, Alouette and Hatch Project teams

For more information about Hatch's engineering and consulting services, please visit their website at www.hatch.com.

About Hatch

Hatch is a global engineering consultancy firm that delivers innovative solutions to clients in the mining, metals, and energy industries. She joined the structural Project Delivery Group (PDG) at Hatch's Johannesburg office for four years. Working there for a silo recovery project showcased her skills as a structural engineer and paved the way for her to transition to the Abu Dhabi office, where she led the civil and structural scope for a potline extension executed for Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), a prominent aluminium smelter.

Her motivation to pursue a career in engineering stemmed from her love for math and science. With a fascination for structures and buildings, she recognized engineering as an ideal avenue to apply her innate problem-solving skills. Undeterred by the industry's male-dominated landscape, Nicole remained resolute in leaving her mark and breaking down gender barriers. She highlights that men and women are equal in the field of engineering, but differences become more apparent at higher levels of seniority where the number of women is still low. Instead of a barrier, this motivates Nicole to continue to step out of her comfort zone, grow into these roles and support the growth of other women in the field.

Looking back at her career, Nicole takes pride in her professional growth and the successful projects she has led and executed. However, being viewed as a role model, mentor and a respected leader by her female colleagues remains her proudest accomplishment. She cherishes the opportunity to inspire and motivate other women in the field, fostering an environment of support and camaraderie.

Nicole Teeling's journey in the field of engineering serves as a testament to the immense potential of women in the industry. Her dedication, perseverance, and achievements shine brightly on this International Women in Engineering Day.

Wendy Harris, Systems Gas Handling Engineer. With an impressive 18-year tenure at Hatch. Wendy has become an influential figure in the industry. She is currently serving as the off-gas lead on the Kalgoorlie Smelter Renewal project for BHP, where she manages the technical and project aspects to provide the client with optimized off-gas solutions.

Wendy's career journey began as a process engineer for non-ferrous metals. Her introduction to off-gas work during the Yabulu Extension project in Queensland sparked her interest, leading her to shift her technical focus in that direction. With dedication and continuous work in Brisbane's off-gas roles, Wendy's skills flourished. In 2011, she seized the opportunity to join Hatch's off-gas group in Mississauga, Canada. This experience shaped her career trajectory, leading her to become an indispensable asset in her field. In 2017, Wendy returned to Australia to take on growing and leading a team.

What initially drew Wendy to pursue a career in engineering was her passion for math and science-based subjects. Engineering presented a unique balance between technical expertise and project development, captivating her interest.

Reflecting on her journey, Wendy is aware of the existence of gender barriers within the industry. Despite the near 50/50 gender representation in the initial stages of her career, she has observed a noticeable gap over time. “One barrier that I have seen is the unspoken barrier related to the expectation of the female to carry the household and the pressure and guilt this puts on females to juggle it all, This then extends to the feeling of not being able to meet the traditional expectations on what is valued or perceived as required for success in this industry,“ she explains.

When asked about her proudest achievements, she emphasizes her ability to carve her path using her independence and self-driven nature to navigate her career in Hatch. While acknowledging and being grateful for the guidance she has received from exceptional colleagues, Wendy attributes her accomplishments primarily to her determination and staying true to herself throughout her journey.

{7A6E2548-997B-4F90-9069-BF6122A23BA4}https://www.hatch.com/About-Us/News-And-Media/2023/06/Partnership-signed-to-reinforce-diversity-and-inclusion-in-ChilePartnership signed to reinforce diversity and inclusion in Chile

Hatch has announced a partnership with Women in Mining Chile (WIM Chile), one of the country’s leading institutions in the mining industry.

WIM Chile promotes and advocates for good working practices, gender equity, and the increased participation of women in the mining industry.

WIM Chile is the perfect partner to support Hatch’s initiatives to increase inclusion of women at all levels in the organization. The study included a survey of 1,250 SME owners and managers across regions and industries in Australia.

The 64-page report was released today.

SMEs are the heart and soul of the Australian economy and community. They generate more than half of Australia’s economic growth and employ two-thirds of the local workforce, and as a catalyst for innovation, they’re responsible for creating most of the country’s new products, services, processes, and business approaches.

SMEs play a pivotal role in Australian government’s plan to develop a leading digital economy by 2030. Due to social distancing throughout the COVID pandemic, SMEs have already accelerated their use of digital technologies, from email, websites, and messaging apps to collaboration tools, the cloud, and e-commerce solutions. SMEs use these tools for external and internal purposes: to connect and communicate with customers, employees, and suppliers; create new products and services; access new, cost-effective ways to market and sell their products; and drive operational efficiencies.

Key findings:

Successful digital transformation does not come from simply using digital technology. It requires rethinking business approaches, building digital talent and skills, interacting online with customers, growing sales through digital channels, and creating a culture of ongoing innovation.

Small- and medium-sized businesses not only drive their own performance through digital technology, but also boost growth within local economies. While the benefits of digital transformation are clear, SMEs face speed bumps on the road to digital leadership.

SMEs often lack the skills, infrastructure, and budgets needed to succeed. They also may struggle to keep up with rapid technological change while coping with escalating data privacy and security risks.

Hatch and ThoughtLab will be releasing a sister report on the future of the UK’s digital economy within the next few weeks.

Download the report today!

Executive Summary

Full Report

For more information, please contact:
Lindsay Janca
Global Director, Public Relations
Tel: +1 905 403 4199
Email: media@hatch.com

About Hatch

Whatever our clients envision, our teams can design and build. For the seventh consecutive year, we’ve been honored by the Australia Association of Graduate Employers (AAGE) as a top workplace for interns gaining work experience during their studies.

The Top Interns Program list is determined by the interns themselves through a survey of more than 1,800 participants. The survey is completed anonymously, and interns are asked to rate their employer in 15 different categories including:

Induction and training.

Content of work

Ability to work on different projects or in different areas of the organization.

Quality of supervision provided by manager

Amount of responsibility

Access to senior management

Feedback on performance

Social life

Organization's culture and values

At Hatch, we believe that learning happens best when trying out and applying new skills on the job. Given the diverse nature of our work across sectors, interns are provided many opportunities to develop skills relevant to the work they do and their field of study. They act as a technical resource on challenging projects, learning to apply analytical, conceptual, research, and planning skills to deliver exceptional work with their teams. Interns are also exposed to modern tools, equipment, and software. In addition to that, they gain exposure to a network in their respective fields and across the business, facilitating further mentorship and guidance.

“We feel a great sense of responsibility in training our next generation of engineers, scientists, and technologists, and take great pride in providing a strong intern program,” shared Jan Kwak, Hatch’s regional managing director, Australia-Asia. “We believe that the experience that interns gain is foundational for their success as they enter the workforce. The world is facing many complex challenges and our interns will be part of the generation to find the solutions to those challenges. It’s inspiring and energizing to work alongside our interns who show such curiosity and passion for their work.”

Earlier this year, we were also named one of the Top Graduate Employers by the AAGE, cementing our position as a top workplace for young professionals.

-30-

For more information, please contact:
Lindsay Janca
Global Director, Public Relations
Tel: +1 905 403 4199
Email: media@hatch.com

About Hatch

Whatever our clients envision, our teams can design and build. This prestigious recognition highlights Hatch's significant contributions to the C$288 million investment by Glencore, aimed at reducing SO2 and particulate emissions, as well as improving productivity at the Sudbury Smelter in Ontario, Canada.

The Process Gas Project (PGP) and the Particulate Emissions Project (PEP) are vital components of Glencore's long-term strategy to ensure the sustainability and viability of their Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operation (INO). In response to the government-mandated SO2 and emissions-reduction requirement, Glencore entrusted Hatch with the responsibility of managing the PGP/PEP, which began in 2010.

Hatch has played a pivotal role in this transformative endeavor, providing comprehensive engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) services for process-gas upgrades and particulate emissions reduction. Our team has worked diligently to bring the Sudbury Smelter into compliance with the new provincial regulations, effectively reducing allowable emissions of SO2 gas and heavy metals such as nickel, cadmium, lead, and cobalt air emissions.

The Process Gas Project involved a significant upgrade to the smelter's process-gas systems, including gas cleaning, heat recovery, and heat exchange systems. By optimizing these critical components, Hatch successfully enhanced operational efficiency, reduced energy consumption, and minimized environmental impact.

In the Particulate Emissions Project, Hatch employed advanced technologies to reduce the release of particulate matter into the atmosphere. This included the implementation of high-efficiency dust collection systems and the installation of state-of-the-art filtration equipment. These measures have significantly improved air quality and mitigated the impact of heavy metal emissions on the surrounding environment.

"We are immensely proud to be recognized for our contributions to the Process Gas Project and Particulate Emissions Project at the Sudbury Smelter," said Ben Paillé, Hatch’s project manager for the PGP/PEP projects. "This award is a testament to the expertise, dedication, and unwavering commitment of our talented team at Hatch. This prestigious award recognizes the exceptional achievements of Hatch in optimizing the design and delivery of this landmark infrastructure project.

The Kingston Third Crossing, recently named the Waaban Crossing, is the largest transportation investment in Kingston's history, aimed at providing a much-needed third connection between communities on the east and west of the Cataraqui River. The river forms part of the Rideau Canal system, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is a federally regulated navigable waterway, which required the project to carefully consider the design and construction engineering to minimize costs, risks, and environmental impacts.

One of the key highlights of the Kingston Third Crossing project was the adoption of an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) contract model, making it the first bridge construction project in Canada to use this innovative arrangement. The IPD partners, comprised of the City of Kingston as the owner, Hatch and SYSTRA-IBT as designers, Kiewit for construction, and trade partners Bauer Foundations Canada and Walters Group (steelwork), were integrated from the very start of the design process, setting shared goals and maintaining shared accountability for delivering the best project possible on time and on budget.

The collaborative nature of the IPD agreement permitted the team to optimize the design of the bridge and to successfully navigate rising steel prices and various challenges caused by the covid pandemic. Amendments to the design to bring the project within budget included simplified bridge piers and a revised main span layout (which both also offered environmental benefits) and a change to concrete girders, from steel, on the approach spans. In all, design changes resulted in an estimated $12 million in savings to the project.

Close collaboration with Federal and Provincial regulators, with Indigenous communities, and with surrounding residential groups resulted in a bridge that both respects the Rideau Canal heritage site and provides new opportunities for growth within Kingston. The project also supported local economic development by contracting locally for over $22 million in goods and services and creating over 160,000 direct hours of local employment.

"We are honoured to receive the Ontario Engineering Project Award for our work on the Kingston Third Crossing project," said Biljana Rajlic, Global Director, Highways & Bridges at Hatch and Project Manager. "This project exemplifies Hatch's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and collaboration in delivering complex infrastructure projects. We are proud to have played a key role in this landmark project that will provide significant benefits to the Kingston community for years to come."

For more information about the Kingston Third Crossing (Waaban Crossing) project click here.
-30-
For more information, please contact:
Lindsay Janca
Global Director, Public Relations
Tel: +1 905 403 4199
Email: media@hatch.com

About Hatch

Whatever our clients envision, our engineers can design and build. The award recognizes outstanding achievement in transportation infrastructure planning, design, and construction.

The Kingston Third Crossing, also known as the Waaban Crossing, is a new bridge over the Cataraqui River in the city of Kingston, Ontario. The bridge was designed to provide a connection between communities on the east and west sides of the river, improve emergency response times, accommodate future growth of the city, promote active and public transportation alternatives, and be respectful of the crossing's location within the river.

The adoption of an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) contract model was a significant feature of the Kingston Third Crossing project, marking it as the first bridge construction project in Canada to implement this novel approach. The IPD partners, including the City of Kingston as the owner, Hatch and SYSTRA-IBT as designers, Kiewit for construction, and trade partners Bauer Foundations Canada and Walters Group (steelwork), were seamlessly integrated right from the inception of the design process. This enabled them to establish common objectives and maintain a collective responsibility for delivering a high-quality project within the allocated budget and timeline.

The collaborative approach taken in the IPD agreement allowed the project team to optimize the bridge design and navigate the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and rising steel prices. To keep the project within budget, several design modifications were implemented, including simplified bridge piers, a revised main span layout with environmental benefits, and a switch from steel to concrete girders on the approach spans. These design changes resulted in a significant cost savings of around $12 million for the project.

Through close collaboration with Federal and Provincial regulators, Indigenous communities, and surrounding residential groups, the project was able to respect the heritage site of the Rideau Canal while also creating new opportunities for growth within Kingston. Moreover, the project supported local economic development by awarding over $22 million in contracts for goods and services to local businesses and creating over 160,000 direct hours of local employment.

"We are honored to receive the Infrastructure Achievement Award from the Transportation Association of Canada for our work on the Kingston Third Crossing project," said Biljana Rajlic, Global Director, Highways & Bridges at Hatch and Project Manager. "This project exemplifies Hatch's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and collaboration in delivering complex infrastructure projects. We are proud to have played a key role in this landmark project that will provide significant benefits to the Kingston community for years to come."

The award will be presented at the TAC's Annual Conference and Exhibition, which will take place from September 25-28, 2023 in Victoria, British Columbia.

For more information about the Kingston Third Crossing (Waaban Crossing) project click here.

-30-

For more information, please contact:
Lindsay Janca
Global Director, Public Relations
Tel: +1 905 403 4199
Email: media@hatch.com

About Hatch

Whatever our clients envision, our engineers can design and build. On April 27th, Hatch hosted the annual Working Together Safely forum just ahead of World Day for Safety and Health at Work. With health and safety at the foundation of our organization’s core values, this year’s forum focused on the importance of mental wellness in the post-pandemic era—in particular, what it means to be resilient when facing uncertainty, and the importance of knowing how to diffuse stress in ourselves and our colleagues.

Every year, this forum brings us together with our clients, partners, contractors, and colleagues, and this year, we gathered to talk about post-pandemic mental health and what it means to hold ourselves and our colleagues accountable when facing adversity and managing stress reactions.

Keynote speaker Kevin Rempel, Canadian Paralympic bronze medalist, opened the day with a question: what does the word hero mean to you? Now an executive coach, Kevin’s direct delivery style gripped the audience as he spoke about the value of crafting your own life stories, and the way that the comeback story is the most influential one of all. His compelling storytelling abilities brought the unimaginable to life as he shared how he became paralyzed in an accident and then reached the Olympic podium.

Kevin Rempel and Sylvia Marusyk.

Kevin set the tone for the morning and the rest of the speakers followed with high energy and vigor. Hatch also designed and developed a combination wall reinforcement for the existing wharf and a piled wall to connect the new berth, while preparing and managing multiple dredging contracts.

Additionally, Hatch Dillon assisted with consultation efforts with local First Nations, engaging directly with communities to develop capacity agreements in support of continued relationship-building between Port Authority and the Nations throughout project construction. The project had a significant positive impact on New Brunswick's economy, and the terminal capacity was increased to 650,000 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units). The project team dredged and reused 600,000 m3 of soft soils as land reclamation, creating several acres of land, increasing the size of the Port's container terminal, mitigating major environmental disruption, and saving project costs.

"We're thrilled to have won the Power of Collaboration Award for our work on the Port Saint John Westside Modernization Project," said Damon Jericho, Hatch's Global Director for Ports & Terminals. "This project was complex, and our team worked tirelessly to overcome significant design and operational challenges. I'm proud of our team's dedication to collaboration, innovation, and sustainability, and the positive impact this project has had on the community and the environment."

The ACEC New Brunswick Engineering Excellence Awards is an annual event that celebrates and promotes the provision of exemplary consulting engineering services locally, nationally, and internationally. The event further serves to educate the public and highlight the valuable contributions of New Brunswick’s Consulting Engineers in their work at home and abroad.

For more information about the Port Saint John Westside Modernization Project click here.

-30-

For more information, please contact:

Lindsay Janca
Global Director, Public Relations
Tel: +1 905 403 4199
Email: media@hatch.com

About Hatch

Whatever our clients envision, our engineers can design and build.
