Contract to support Life-Extension Program and help ensure continued low-cost power

Tiverton, ON – Bruce Power and Hatch Ltd. have entered into a contract to support Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program. 

Hatch, a Canadian and employee-owned engineering, procurement and construction management firm, will provide feeder mock-up design services for the Major Component Replacement Feeders Program. This mock-up design project will simulate critical parameters found in the plant such as component characteristics, size, shape, composition, and field conditions. 

Extending the life of the Bruce Power site will ensure the electricity it provides Ontario families and businesses continues to be part of the solution over both the short and long-term to provide a source of low-cost stable electricity.

Bruce Power generates 30 per cent of Ontario’s electricity at 30 per cent below the average residential cost. In fact, in 2016 Bruce Power was paid 6.6 cents per KW/h for its electricity, while the average residential price was about 11 cents per KW/h. 

The Unit 6 Major Component Replacement Project gets underway in 2020 and is part of Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program which will extend the life of the Bruce site until 2064 and ensure Bruce Power nuclear continues to provide low-cost electricity for families and business for years to come. 

In order to better support the long-standing success of Bruce Power, the Bruce County community and the Unit 6 Major Component Replacement Project, Hatch opened an office in Port Elgin, Ontario in July 2016. 

The Major Component Replacement Feeders Program, part of Bruce Power’s Life-Extension Program, is responsible for the replacement of 960 Primary Heat Transport feeders during Bruce Power’s major component replacements. 

“This mock-up design project will support project execution planning for the Feeders Program,” said Brian Swanton, Project Manager, Feeder Replacement Program. “Completion of this work will provide our project team with the ability to validate required estimates and schedules, and more importantly, prepare a competent, well-trained workforce capable of executing the work in a safe and predictable manner.”
