Abstract

Lafontaine tunnel has undergone a major rehabilitation including an upgrade of the ventilation system to enhance the tunnel safety during an incident within the tunnel. This paper provides an overview of different stages of the upgrade describing option studies leading to the latest ventilation system upgrade of the tunnel which includes the addition of Sacaardo nozzles system and replacements of ventilation equipment in line with the latest requirements of codes and standards. Upgrade of evacuation strategy during an emergency scenario has been discussed using pressurized airlock between traffic tubes and evacuation corridors for improved safety of tunnel users.
